phpBB Discussion • Re: HIGH GUEST NUMBERS

I am experiencing this as well, despite having an Apache /usr/local/apache/conf.d/bots.conf file enabled on my server, per my ISP. I named it off, and then restarted Apache. I should note, I have a production environment running phpBB 3.3.5/PHP 7.4, and a test environment running phpBB 3.3.14/PHP 8.2. I tried replacing the .htaccess file in both phpBB roots with the one supplied on the hifikabin site. In the case of the production environment, the change was not effective; I continue to be battered by bots. Here's a screenshot after purging the cache, and resetting the counter:

In the case of the test environment, it appears that it *was* effective:

Is this to be expected, on an older version of phpBB?

However - in both environments - I get this pop-up, every twenty seconds or so:

What's that all about, and how do I fix it? It goes away if I restore the .htaccess file that comes with the distribution.

I have another general question about these rules. My forum root is below /public_html, i.e., there are other websites besides my forum. And what about the .htaccess file in /public_html? Do I need bot rules in every instance of a .htaccess file?

Dan

Edit: For whatever reason, my test forum seems not to be plagued by bots, with or without anti-bot measures. I don't know what that's all about, either.
